Information for Volunteers
Are you interested in improving the lives of refugees and other forced migrants living in Scotland? Student Action for Refugees (STAR) Dundee are running a befriending service called LINK, where you can sign up as a befriender! You do not have to be a student to volunteer with us. In your role as a befriender, you will be linked with a refugee living in Scotland who you can chat to via video call, phone and messages at scheduled times. Through this role you can help your partner practice their English, answer their questions about the local area and culture, or even make a few friends.

The Process
If you apply to be a befriender you will be asked to attend a (virtual) interview. This is simply a casual chat for us explain more about the service, confirm your expectations and make sure you are right for the role. You will also be required to fill out a form for a protection of vulnerable groups (PVG) certificate. You will be provided with online training and a certificate of completion.
We will then arrange a first meeting with your befriendee and our Volunteer Coordinator. If both parties are happy to go ahead with the match after this meeting we will share your partner’s contact details with you and you will contact them at agreed times.
The amount of time you want to spend talking with your partner is up to you, we can be flexible around your availability. You are also only expected to talk to your partner socially, you do not need to give any information about government processes or asylum applications so don’t worry about being out of your depth!
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch.
